International Applicants

St. John’s Theological Seminary (SJTS) warmly welcomes applicants from around the world who desire to deepen their understanding of the Orthodox faith and engage in rigorous theological study. Rooted in the Syriac Orthodox tradition and open to all who wish to learn, SJTS offers an academic community shaped by prayer and service.

Who Should Apply

International applicants include any non-U.S. citizens or non-U.S. permanent residents seeking admission to SJTS programs. The Diploma in Theology program is designed for laypersons, clergy, and anyone seeking a structured foundation in Orthodox theology — no matter where they live.

Part-Time, Online Learning

The Diploma in Theology program is offered part-time and fully online, making it accessible to students worldwide. Students typically take two courses per semester, completing the 24-credit program over four semesters.

While the program is primarily online, SJTS offers optional on-site practical sessions and workshops at the seminary and affiliated locations. These in-person experiences are encouraged but not mandatory — students may complete approved alternatives within their local area. For details and guidance, please contact the Dean’s Office.

Academic Credentials

Applicants should hold the educational background required for this program:

  • Completion of secondary education such as High School Diploma (or international equivalent such as National leaving Examination)
  • A solid record of academic achievement suitable for theological study

If your transcripts are issued outside the United States or Canada, you may be asked to submit a general credential evaluation from a recognized evaluation service (e.g., WES or comparable evaluator).

English-Language Proficiency

Since instruction is in English, if you are a non-native English speaker, you will need to demonstrate English language competency through exams such as:

  • TOEFL
  • IELTS
  • Duolingo English Test (DET)

SJTS may request a writing sample or interview to confirm readiness.

Required Application Materials

International applicants submit the same core materials as U.S. applicants, plus:

  • Official transcripts and certified English translations (if not in English)
  • Credential evaluation (if requested)
  • Proof of English proficiency (if required)
  • Copy of passport bio page

See the application requirements page at https://sjtseminary.org/application-requirements/ for more information.

Because this is an online program, proof of living expense funding or U.S. visa sponsorship is not required for enrollment.

Tuition & Fees

International students pay the same tuition rates as domestic students, for the Diploma in Theology program:

  • $150 per credit (24 credits total)
  • Additional fees: application fee, exam fees, diploma processing fee, and other administrative fees.

See the Tuition & Fees page for full details.

Payment Options

The application fee is paid securely by credit card at the end of the online application form. Tuition payments may be made by check in U.S. dollars or by wire transfer. Students who wish to pay by wire transfer should contact the Administrative Office to receive detailed transfer instructions and banking information. All tuition payments must be received in full before the start of the semester to confirm enrollment and ensure access to course materials.

Application Timeline

Because transcripts and credential reviews may take additional time, international students are encouraged to apply early to ensure timely admission decisions. See the Applying to St. John’s page for specific dates.
